Electronic Assessment at African Universities

Over the past five years, INNODEMS has collaborated with lecturers from Maseno University, Kenya, and The University of Edinburgh to replace Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) with weekly electronic quizzes using the STACK system. STACK, a leading open-source online assessment tool for STEM subjects, allows students to input mathematical expressions rather than just selecting multiple-choice answers. This method encourages deeper understanding by requiring students to work out  answers themselves. It also offers randomized questions and predictive feedback to enhance learning.

INNODEMS developed two types of weekly quizzes: Mastery Quizzes, which students could retake multiple times to reinforce key concepts, and Test Quizzes, which could only be taken once after achieving 80% in the Mastery Quizzes. These quizzes contribute to 30% of the final grade. The project has expanded, with INNODEMS creating open courses in Calculus and Linear Algebra that are now used in universities across Africa. The initiative continues to grow, with INNODEMS supporting additional courses and offering resources to other institutions via their own servers. The pilot’s success is being further analyzed for publication.
